Wielka Krokiew is one of those places in Zakopane that almost everyone knows, even if they have never been there.
Some associate it with ski jumping competitions, others with Adam Małysz, and others with its distinctive silhouette visible from many parts of town.
Few people, however, wonder what Wielka Krokiew used to be and what it is today, when there are no competitions, cameras or stands full of people.
And this place has changed as much as Zakopane itself.
Before Wielka Krokiew became a legend
It is hard to imagine today, but Wielka Krokiew was not always a sporting icon.
It was built at a time when Zakopane was only just building its identity as a winter sports resort, and ski jumping was not yet a national ritual broadcast into millions of homes.
At first it was simply a sports venue – ambitious and modern for its time, but still local.
It didn’t draw crowds of tourists.
It wasn’t an attraction in itself.
It was a place for sport.
The turning point – when Wielka Krokiew captured the public imagination
Everything changed when ski jumping in Poland became more than a niche sport.
That is when Wielka Krokiew started living not only in winter, but all year round – in conversations, memories and the media.
The stands, which used to be empty for most of the season, began to fill up.
Zakopane came to be associated not only with the Tatras, but with Wielka Krokiew itself.
That was the moment the sports venue became a symbol of the town and of emotions, not just a place of competition.
Wielka Krokiew at the height of its popularity
For many people Wielka Krokiew means images from winter broadcasts: snow, flags, thousands of people and tension in the air.
At times like these Zakopane literally revolves around the ski jump.
The town lives to one rhythm, and the ski jump becomes the focus of the whole of Poland.
That is when its significance goes far beyond sport.
But that is only one face of this place.
Wielka Krokiew off-season – a completely different experience
Outside competitions the ski jump looks completely different.
No crowds, no noise, no tension.
Just silence, space and a distinctive structure that impresses even without all the sporting fanfare.
For many people that is a surprise.
Because it suddenly turns out that Wielka Krokiew is not just a stadium, but part of the Zakopane landscape – present, but not imposing.
It is a place you can see, walk around and feel its scale without the pressure of an event.
Is Wielka Krokiew a tourist attraction today?
Yes – but a different one from most attractions in Zakopane.
Zakopane’s ski jump is not an “hour-long” place like the promenade or a viewpoint.
It is rather a symbolic place worth seeing if you want to understand Zakopane.
For some it will be a quick stop.
For others – an important part of the plan.
A lot depends on how interested you are in sport and the history of the place.

Wielka Krokiew and today’s Zakopane
Today this historic ski jump exists in a completely different Zakopane from the one in which it was built.
The town is bigger, louder and more commercial.
The ski jump, however, has remained a constant – a point of reference that did not fully give in to this change.
It did not turn into a promenade.
It did not become another “attraction with souvenirs at every step”.
And that is exactly why it still carries weight and meaning.
Why the ski jump still stirs emotions
Because Wielka Krokiew is not just a structure.
It is memories, emotions and moments many people remember very clearly.
Even people who don’t follow ski jumping often remember specific moments, names and competitions.
It is one of the few places in Zakopane that brings sport, history and the town’s identity together in one spot.
Is Wielka Krokiew worth seeing today?
Yes – but with the right attitude.
Not as “another attraction to tick off”, but as an important part of Zakopane’s history.
Wielka Krokiew works best as part of something bigger: a walk, sightseeing, getting to know the town.
It doesn’t have to be the main goal of your trip, but it is good if it is part of it.
Summary
Wielka Krokiew has gone from a local sports venue to a symbol recognised across the country.
It has changed, but it has not lost its meaning.
Today it is at the same time:
– an arena of great emotions
– a calm part of the landscape
– a piece of Zakopane’s history
And even if not everyone wants to go back there, it is hard to imagine Zakopane without Wielka Krokiew.
