Krupówki Street in Zakopane 2026 – the History of a Place That Has Changed Beyond Recognition

Krupówki street in Zakopane is today the best-known street in the Polish mountains.
For some a symbol of the town, for others its biggest problem.
Some can’t imagine a visit to Zakopane without a stroll down Krupówki, others avoid it at all costs.

Few people, however, remember – or even know – that Krupówki didn’t always look the way it does today.
This place has come a long way: from a quiet road in a highland village, through an elegant promenade, to one of the most crowded tourist streets in Poland.

And it is worth understanding that journey to better grasp what Krupówki is today.

Before Krupówki became the heart of Zakopane

It is hard to believe when you look at Krupówki today, but it was once no town centre at all.
There were no crowds, restaurants, souvenirs or neon signs.
It was an ordinary road lined with houses and farms.

Zakopane was then a small village at the foot of the Tatras, and Krupówki had a practical, not a representative, role.
Nobody came here “for a stroll”.
Nobody took photos.
The place lived its own quiet, local rhythm.

The moment everything began to change

The real change came with Zakopane becoming fashionable.
When artists, doctors and the intelligentsia started visiting the town, Krupówki began to take on a new meaning.

This is where the first guesthouses, cafés and meeting places appeared.
Krupówki slowly became a place for walking, somewhere to be seen, not just to pass through.

The change was not sudden.
It was a process that took years.
Zakopane grew, and Krupówki grew with it.

Krupówki in the 20th century – the birth of the town’s symbol

In the 20th century Krupówki became the showcase of Zakopane for good.
This is where tourists came, where social and cultural life was concentrated.
A stroll along Krupówki was part of a stay in Zakopane, as natural as the view of the Tatras.

Old photographs show a Krupówki quite different from today.
Fewer adverts, less noise, more space.
It was more elegant and calmer, closer to what we would now call a spa-town promenade.

For many locals, that image of Krupówki is still the “real” one.

Krupówki today – what it really is

See it live on the webcam

Today’s Krupówki is the result of the town’s enormous popularity.
Zakopane stopped being a seasonal resort and became one of the most visited destinations in Poland.

Krupówki had to adapt.
Crowds arrived, along with heavy commercialisation, loud venues and prices that can surprise you.
For many people the first encounter is a shock.

But it is worth saying plainly:
today’s Krupówki is not the result of “bad management” or chance.
It is the natural consequence of mass tourism.

Has Krupówki lost its character?

This question comes up very often.
And the answer is not clear-cut.

Krupówki has certainly changed its character.
It has lost some of its old intimacy and local feel.
But it has gained huge recognition and a representative role.

For some that is an unacceptable loss.
For others the natural evolution of a place that became a symbol.

The truth lies somewhere in between.

Why everyone ends up on Krupówki anyway

Whatever people think of it, Krupówki attracts everyone.
Because it is a landmark.
Because “something is always going on” there.
Because it is hard to avoid when you are in Zakopane.

And maybe there is nothing wrong with that, if you treat it the right way.
Not as the goal of your whole trip, but as one part of it.

How to make the most of Krupówki today

The biggest mistake is expecting Krupówki to give you peace and quiet.
That is no longer what it is.

But it can give you something else:
a picture of the town, its energy, scale and popularity.

A short walk, a coffee, people-watching – that is enough.
The rest of Zakopane is worth discovering away from Krupówki.

Krupówki as a mirror of Zakopane

Today Krupówki is like a mirror reflecting the whole town.
With its strengths and weaknesses.
With its popularity and the consequences of that popularity.

You can’t judge it in isolation from Zakopane as a whole.
Because Krupówki is not a separate entity.
It is the result of what Zakopane has become.

Summary – what is Krupówki really?

Krupówki is not just a street.
It is the story of a small village turning into a tourist phenomenon.
A place that delights, tires and intrigues at the same time.

It is no longer what it used to be.
But it is still an important part of Zakopane’s identity.

And although many people complain, the truth is that without Krupówki, Zakopane would not be the same town.
