Zakopane minibuses (locally called “busy”) are a topic that sooner or later comes up for everyone who arrives in town and starts wondering how to get around sensibly.
A car is not the only option, and in high season it is very often… not the best one at all.
Minibuses, city buses and local connections between villages work differently here than in big cities.
The system can surprise you — sometimes very positively, sometimes quite the opposite.
In this article I show:
- how transport in Podhale works in practice,
- where minibuses are the best solution,
- when city buses make sense,
- and what to watch out for so you don’t get stuck at a stop without a plan B.
No theory.
No brochure descriptions.
From the perspective of someone who lives here and uses it every day.

🚌 City buses in Zakopane – how do they work in practice?
Zakopane is not a big town, but in high season it can get seriously crowded.
That is why city buses can be a lifesaver — as long as you know how to use them.
City buses in Zakopane cover the main routes, connecting the centre with the districts, the stations and the most important starting points for the Tatras.
It is not a perfect system, but in many cases it lets you avoid traffic jams and parking problems.
Where do city buses work best?
City buses make sense especially when:
- you stay in Zakopane or close to the centre,
- you want to get to popular places, e.g. around Krupówki street or Kuźnice,
- you don’t plan to change location every day,
- you travel in high season and don’t want to fight for a parking space.

A very important thing about tickets ⚠️
Remember that tickets bought from machines and on city buses are valid only on city buses.
That means only the blue city buses running in Zakopane.
Minibuses and other transport run by private companies do not accept these tickets.
For a minibus or another operator you always need a separate ticket, usually bought directly from the driver.
This is one of the most common mistakes visitors make.
🚗 Came by car but want to leave it?
If you came to Zakopane by car but don’t want to spend all day looking for parking, a good solution is the car park at the station.
How it works in practice:
- you leave the car at the station car park,
- you pay 12 PLN for the whole day,
- as the driver you can use Zakopane city buses for free for up to 24 hours.
It is a very sensible option if:
- you want to get around town by bus,
- you plan to spend the whole day in Zakopane,
- you don’t want to pay for the expensive parking zones in the centre.
Few people know about it, and it really saves money and nerves.
What else is worth knowing?
- in high season buses can be overcrowded,
- timetables can change,
- it is worth having a plan B at rush hour.
City buses in Zakopane work, but you need to know a few rules so that they actually make getting around easier, not harder.
🚐 Local minibuses in Podhale – how does the system really work?
If you want to get around Podhale without a car, minibuses are unavoidable.
They connect Zakopane with the surrounding villages, valleys and starting points for the Tatras.
There is no single operator, no single app and no perfect timetable.
Instead there is a system that works fast, frequently and highlander-style.
How do the minibuses run?
Minibuses run:
- from Zakopane to the surrounding villages (Kościelisko, Poronin, Bukowina, Białka, Murzasichle and others),
- towards the valleys and popular attractions,
- usually every 10–20 minutes, especially on the main routes.
In high season they can run one after another, especially on the route to Palenica Białczańska, the trailhead for Morskie Oko.
Where do you usually get on?
- around the station in Zakopane,
- on the main through roads,
- at marked stops (although it varies).
The rule is often: the minibus is standing there → it is leaving.
How do you buy tickets?
- you buy the ticket directly from the driver,
- usually paying in cash,
- the price depends on the route.
⚠️ Important:
city bus tickets are not valid on minibuses.
It is a separate system and a separate fare.
✅ Pros of local minibuses:
- fast connections between villages,
- no parking problem at the valleys,
- often cheaper than a taxi,
- frequent services in high season.
❌ Cons you need to know:
- no fixed timetable,
- it can be crowded in high season,
- comfort depends on the route and the time of day,
- no night services.
⚠️ Very important: the last minibus
If you plan to return to your accommodation by minibus, always check:
- what time the last service in your direction leaves.
In Zakopane and the area there are no night buses.
Once the minibuses stop running, you are left with:
- a taxi,
- private transport,
- or improvising on your own.
This is one of the most common mistakes visitors make — going somewhere without checking how to get back.
When are minibuses the best choice?
Minibuses are ideal when:
- you travel in high season,
- you want to get to the valleys and attractions,
- you don’t want to use a car,
- you plan to come back during the day or early evening.
A simple tip
- ask the driver about the last return service,
- have small change,
- keep a plan B.
Minibuses in Zakopane work great, but only when you play by their rules.
🚌 Koleje Małopolskie buses to Slovakia – a bus option from Zakopane
Here we are not talking about trains, but about buses run by Koleje Małopolskie (the regional rail company).
These are regular bus services that go from Zakopane to Slovakia via Bukowina Tatrzańska.
Few people know about them, and they are a very sensible alternative to a car, especially if you want to pop over to the Slovak side of the Tatras without stress.
How does it work in practice?
Koleje Małopolskie buses:
- start in Zakopane,
- go through Bukowina,
- cross the border into Slovakia,
- take you to towns on the Slovak side of the Tatras.
You don’t have to change halfway or improvise with local transport.
Who is it a good option for?
It makes sense if:
- you are staying in Podhale and want a day trip to Slovakia,
- you don’t have a car,
- you don’t want to drive in the mountains in a foreign country,
- you are looking for a simple and cheap connection.
What to keep in mind?
- check the departure and return times carefully,
- there are no night buses — the last service is sacred,
- carry an ID document or passport,
- it is regional transport, so it runs less often than in Zakopane.
Why is it worth knowing?
Because it is one of those options that:
- are not obvious,
- are not as jammed as the Zakopianka road,
- and let you do a trip to Slovakia without a car,
- if you want to get to Poronin, Stasikówka or Bukowina Tatrzańska with luggage, the low-floor bus is the better choice.
